John and I got a puppy last week! John is so thrilled! Our puppy is a little black lab and boxer mix. We named her Maddie and mom and dad and John’s parents are watching her until we move into our house this weekend! I don’t have any pictures yet of her because mostly everything is packed but I will post some soon!

Erin and her exchange student friend, Claire, left on Monday for France. Erin will be there for 35 days and she was so nervous. She called mom yesterday and said that she almost had to go to the hospital already because when she got off the plane, her feet swelled up so much that she could barely walk. So she spent most of her first day with her feet up. The exchange student, Claire, was a lot of fun. Mom and dad took her all over the place. They took her camping, to Niagara Falls, CN tower, to Kristens new apartment, Upper Canada Village, horse-back riding and I took her and Erin to the Museum of Science and Tech, the Royal Canadian Mint, the Byward Market, changing of the guard, bowling, and to the Prime ministers house and the Frence embassy. Claire didn’t speak much english so Erin had lots of practice with French. And Claire and Trav got along really well.

Kristen is doing very well. She started her new job and it’s going well. She’s gone camping with the youth group from the church she’s going to out there and so she’s met some people and has a few friends. We miss her. She says she coming at the end of August to visit.

Our new home!

It’s also been a while since we’ve posted anything…..there wasn’t too much exciting happening. But as of yesterday, John and I are homeowners. We bought a house on Holmes Road just outside of Winchester (by Geggie’s Hardware). We are so excited!! We can move in on July 28th! I’m a little sad that Kristen is moving this weekend and she hasn’t even seen the house yet….but I guess she will see it sometime when she visits! So there has been a lot of big changes in the DeJong family this summer. Kristen moving to Straffordville, Erin going to France on an exchange, John and I moving to Winchester, Travis has finished grade 6 and really wants to get a summer job! Mom and Dad are going to home alone with Trav for the first time in their life.

The house we bought is a bungalow with 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 bathrooms. It has a bar in the basement (the highlight for John) and it has 3 acres with a small barn.

School’s almost done!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — jess at 5:19 pm on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Here’s to all the college and university students that are almost done! It’s so exciting! Organic chemistry is almost done, and summer is almost here! There is only one month left of this school year and I can hardly wait. We don’t have an exciting summer vacation planned but there are tons of weddings this summer! We have five to go to! I love it, so many parties. John and I are both in the wedding party for Matt and Lori (some close friends of ours) and the stag and bachelor/ bachelorette party and bridal shower and not to mention the wedding are all coming up! John and I have been keeping busy. John works a lot and I have school and I work too. I have been getting called in a lot so it makes things really busy.

John and I have signed up to run a 10K in May. I have been practicing and trying to get John to practice but his theory is better to be sore for one day than a whole bunch of days practicing. Stubborn man!

I finally found some one to do my thesis with… Dr. Steve Brooks. He works at Health Canada and he does research on how dietary fibre passes through the intestine and what bacteria are involved in the process. So this means I will be working at Health Canada for eight months, just doing my thesis… but hopefully will lead to a job after. My part of the research is going to be done on rats and monkeys and I get to test their stools! From one crappy job to another…literally (For those of you who don’t know, right now I test human stools as well as other things). Oh well, it should be some good experience if nothing else. I just can’t wait to be done, one more year seems like it will last forever.

Anyways, good luck on exams for the students! Happy Easter to all!

News from our family!

Filed under: Uncategorized — jess at 2:34 pm on Thursday, January 25, 2007

News from our family! Mom hasn’t put up any recent postings so I thought I would share. Christmas was a blast this year! Dad put up a hillbilly hot tub (made from straw bales and pool liner and a hot water heater) that fit probably 20 people. Every time I talk to them, they are in that hot tub. So Mom and Dad actually bought a hot tub and they pick it up on Friday. Can’t wait! Mom has joined pro- kickboxing and was having trouble with her back so after some x-rays that found that her discs are out of place, she has arthritis in her back and her spine is twisted. The doctor has advised her to quit kickboxing, but mom is too stubborn and won’t. She went to the chiropractor and he did some cracking but he said that he won’t be able to help but he thought that mom could continue with kickboxing but can’t do anything too extreme. Maybe the hot tub will help some!

Kristen is working more than ever and is thoroughly enjoying school (and doing very well!).
Erin is traveling lots this year. She is going with the youth group for the March Break to
Florida to do hurricane relief stuff. She is also going to New York City with the school band and on an exchange (I think to France) for the month of July and a student from
France is coming to mom and dad’s place for the month of August. Lots of good experience! Travis has joined a grappling club and loves it! They just wrestle for an hour and a half and Trav is pretty good at it. He also was the second top seller of chocolate bars for school so he got to ride in a limo to get a McDonalds lunch and to the skating party.

John has been working a lot. But he is doing well and keeping healthy. John came home from work the other day and my stomach hurt for two days laughing at him because he was wearing these skin tight jeans (he could get the button done up) that ended mid calf. The bottoms of the pants were maybe an inch above his work boots. He split his pants that he wore to work that day so Dave, a guy from his work who is tiny, lent him a pair of pants! Too funny!

I am in my second semester of my third year and I wish it was my second semester of my fourth year but I do like my classes. I am currently looking for a prof to do my fourth year research project with and it’s pretty stressful. I haven’t been working as much but I still like my job. John and I bought a Volkswagen Jetta this past weekend and can’t wait to get because we’ve been sharing a car and I don’t like to wake up a 5 o’clock in the morning to drive him to work! It sucks! After we got John’s car fixed up from hitting the deer, the brake line on my car blew.

A long overdue posting!

Filed under: Uncategorized — jess at 10:33 am on Saturday, December 9, 2006

A long overdue posting, that’s for sure! I guess an update about what’s been going on with John and I. I think everyone knows that John and I bought a truck (a 5- tonne) and he now drives truck for that same company as Dad. John loves it but we’ve had our share of bad luck with the truck. In October, the engine in the truck went, so we had two choices, buy a new truck or replace the engine. We choose to replace the engine but still very expensive. We ended up buying a school bus and Dad, John, John’s dad and a bunch of friends took the engine out of the school bus and put it in John’s truck. It was a long weekend of work. They started on Friday afternoon around 2 o’clock and work till 1 o’clock in the morning, starting again at 5 o’clock on Saturday until 2 o’clock in the morning, and same on Sunday. John was driving the truck Sunday night back to the warehouse, and all the lights quit working. So, it took a few nights after work on Monday and Tuesday to get the lights to work. Then about 1 month ago, John was moving a really heavy skid and he had moved the dock plate (a metal sheet that John says is about 200 pounds) out of the way to move this skid. And, wouldn’t you know, the dock plate fell and hit John on the back of his heel. He was wearing his steel toe work boots, but he still hurt his heel badly. I got a call that John was in the hospital and the doctors had thought that he had torn his Achilles’ tendon. X-rays were taken and they discovered that he did not tear it but he had damaged it and was on crutches for a while. Then two weeks later, I was driving Cheryl (John’s sister) back to Barhaven, and I hit a deer (in John’s car). It was really damaged and the deer was dead. John was following me in his truck so he stopped. We realized that I didn’t have insurance on his car, so John brought his truck back to his parents, and we claimed that John was driving the car. John forgot his license, he had expired insurance papers in his car and the license plate stickers were expired. It was a nightmare. The cop came and just said for John to change his insurance papers and remember his license next time. He was really nice. I don’t think he noticed the expired stickers on his license plate. In this meantime, John had been helping Dad that day build a hay feeder, and while grinding, he got a hot piece of metal in his eye. So when he woke up on Monday morning, his eye was really infected and he had a really hard time seeing. So once again to the hospital, and they had to scrape the metal out of his eye. He was on antibiotics for a week to get rid of the infection. We just got John’s car fixed up. John and Dad fixed it because we also didn’t have comprehensive insurance. All in all, we were lucky, everything could have been a lot worse. John’s truck is running well, and for the time being, he is healthy.

We are living in a small basement apartment in Navan. It’s about 15 minutes to John’s work and about the same for me. It’s 20 minutes to school. Our apartment has two bedrooms, which is very convenient because I use the one bedroom for all my school stuff.  It’s an hour to our parents and to church and we would like to move a bit closer to mom and dad eventually, probably when I’m done school. We got our first Christmas tree. It’s 3 feet tall and has fibre optic lights. I decorated it and it looks cute.

Anyways, can’t wait till Christmas! Looking forward to those Christmas dinners! John is a little sick of burnt everything!
